Held at Hachiko Square and other locations in Shibuya, October 2025 – February 2026, as part of DIG SHIBUYA 2026. Co-planned with YUKI MORITA.
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Hachiko statue, this urban ARG (alternate reality game) invites participants to become Hachiko themselves and walk the streets of Shibuya in search of owners scattered across the city. It was staged at Hachiko Square in Shibuya.
Question: How can the acts of "waiting" and "searching" be reconsidered through Hachiko?
The artist researched the 100-year history of the Hachiko statue, collecting only photographs taken from Hachiko's point of view to trace how Shibuya has changed as seen from the statue. Considering how waiting and searching have changed in the age of social media, the experience was designed so that participants take Hachiko's place and search for their master.
Participants receive a tail-shaped key chain and become Hachiko, following clues scattered around Shibuya to find the owner. Those who find them receive a reward card and relive the Shibuya scenery that Hachiko saw while waiting.
Handouts supporting the experience were also designed and produced, including the tail key chains, QR cards, a walking map and signboards. The project involved negotiations with Shibuya City, the local police and the SCT executive committee, from obtaining road-use permits to designing rules for the handouts.
